Is online classes worth it ?

Before you begin your journey into the world of online classes, you may want to ask yourself is online education worth it? While there are a plethora of benefits to taking classes over the internet, there are also a host of cons as well. It all comes down to the method you choose when deciding whether or not online learning is for you. The pros definitely outweigh the cons when you take into account your schedule, financial budget and how much time you can devote to your studies.
The internet has become an integral part of our lives. Whether we’re checking emails on our phone or researching last night’s science project on Google, we expect instant access to information from any device at any moment in time. This is why online education is so valuable. Not only can you learn at your own pace, but you also have access to the world’s knowledge from the comfort of your home.
The best way to see if online education is worth it for you is to take some time and do some research on all of your options. Are you looking for a basic class or are you hoping to earn a degree? How much time do you have available outside of school and work? Do you want a brick and mortar classroom environment or will video conferencing work just as well? Those are just a few questions that need to be answered in order for you to find the right fit for your learning style.
We’ve compiled a list of the top ten different types of online classes to help you get started.
Intensive/Live Online Classes. This method is very similar to taking an in-person class. You’ll have the same amount of time to study as you would in a traditional classroom, but you’ll be able to work at your own pace. Professor and student interaction is key in this type of learning environment and there is plenty of opportunity for questions and answers. The downfall is that you may feel isolated if you don’t have access to other students or professors outside of your scheduled time.

Online Tutorials. This type of online education is similar to what you would see in an online course for a brick and mortar college. You’ll get the chance to learn from a professional instructor or professor that will walk you through step-by-step tutorials using the book, video series or audio they are going over as their teaching material. This type of learning can be very effective when paired with in-person classes, but can be very limiting if you only have access to one app or website. It’s always better to have multiple options and resources available for your learning style and schedule.

Online Classes Through Web Video Channels and Applications . This type of class is a lot like taking a university class through a YouTube channel or application, except you have a live instructor. You’ll have direct access to the instructor at all times and the class takes place over multiple platforms, allowing you to work at your own pace. This method of learning can be very effective if you’re looking for structured projects that will be graded based on the final product, but there’s no opportunity for peer interaction and work done outside of the course will not be graded.
Online Learning Through Web Video Channels . This type of online education works very similar to the previous option we mentioned, but you don’t have access to the instructor at all times. You can still make notes and ask questions, but you’re not going to get any immediate feedback. The benefit is that you’ll have even more time to work through your assignments. Experienced students will enjoy this freedom while those who are new may feel overwhelmed by it.
Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). This type of online learning is essentially an online course materialized into a video series or app for an online learning platform. Video lectures and text-based tutorials are paired with articles, homework assignments, videos and other study materials all within a Learning Management System (LMS). This type of education can be very effective when there is no live instructor and you have access to the world’s knowledge at your fingertips. There are no questions, no discussion boards and most importantly, you’ll have time to work through assignments.

Self-paced Courses. This type of online class gives you the freedom to work through a set of assigned material at your own pace. While there is no instructor or professor, all of the work you’re doing is being graded based on your ability to complete assignments and interact with other students within the same platform. The benefit of this type is that you are in control over how much time you want to spend on each subject, which makes it easier for beginner students who don’t have a lot of free time to dedicate to learning.
Massive Courses. This type of education works very similar to MOOCs, but you only have access to one specific course materialized into a video series or app for an online learning platform. Video lectures, text-based tutorials and other study material are paired with articles, homework assignments, videos and other study materials. The benefit of this type of education is that you are in control over how much time you want to spend on each subject and you can work directly with the creator of the course should they choose to respond to any questions or concerns that may arise. You’ll be able to ask for help when needed as well as receive regular updates on new content being made available.

How much does it cost to take an online college course?

Don’t want to leave your nice home office or library? Want to take a course with a professor who can answer your questions and approve extensions for assignments? You’re in luck! Today, there are many institutions that offer online college courses. These courses are usually one year or less in length. Students can choose from a wide range of online learning formats and subjects, such as literature, history, government, engineering or business.

In the past, distance learning was the standard way for students to take on-campus courses. This type of class involves making a trip to campus each week for face-to-face classes. For students who didn’t want to make the trip, there was no other option. Now, the Internet introduces a new option for distance learners. Online college courses provide the convenience of distance learning along with the benefits of a traditional on-campus class.

Although online college courses have been around for some time, most people don’t realize how inexpensive they are. Tuition at many schools is only $250 per semester (or lower). But how much does it really cost? We answer this question in the following pages. You’ll also learn about some of the advantages of taking an online college course.

Cost – The Price of Online College Courses
The cost of taking an online college course is usually less expensive than attending a traditional class. Here are some general figures that include course fees and required books (when applicable). These figures are for yearly courses only (in-person or distance) and do not include supplies, transportation, or equipment costs.

Public institutions cost more than private, as you would expect.

In-Person Distance Public $1,100 $1,850 Private $1,800 $2,400

On average, the typical online course costs less than a traditional class. This figure includes online fees and book (if applicable). Required books can be purchased used from various bookstores around the world for about $50-$150. Most students do not purchase required books.

Required Books In-Person Distance Public $250-$450 Private $250-$450

The cost of taking an online course can be as low as $500 per course. A private school may require more books, which would mean supplemental costs, but an in-person class may cost more.

Cost – The Cost of Expensive Books
Most students are not required to purchase any required books for online classes. But some courses still require online textbooks and other materials.

Required Books In-Person Distance Public $100-$200 Private $100-$200

How Much Does It Really Cost? – Basic Costs
You will need to budget approximately $250-$350 per course to cover the following basic costs (in addition to tuition). If you’re planning on purchasing required books, make sure to add about $50-$150 for that expense.

Tuition – this is the cost of the class. It’s the same price if you are attending in person or online (unless the school offers exclusive discounts for online students). You can use FinAid’s Net Price Calculator  to find out what your specific tuition will be. It takes about five minutes to fill out and it’s free.
Required Books and Supplies – this is the minimum required amount of books (like the ones shown in the chart above) that you will need to purchase. This amount may vary from course to course. You may also need supplies that are not associated with books, such as wireless access codes needed to log into your classes.
Course Fees – this is a non-refundable fee that you pay for each class. You can use FinAid’s Net Price Calculator  to find out what your specific fee per class cost will be. This is usually between $1-$10 for each class.
Transportation and Lodging – this is the cost of transportation from home to school so that you can attend classes. If you live fairly close by, this may not be an issue. For students living further away, it may become quite expensive (depending upon your needs). Some schools offer daycare services and student housing for online students.
Alumni Discount – Some online schools offer an ongoing discount for alumni that are still actively enrolled. If you do not live or work out of state, you may be eligible to receive this discount. The discount can be up to $200 or more. It can definitely help to reduce your costs.
Check out FinAid’s Guide To Online College Courses for additional information on how much it will cost you to attend even more courses.
Is the Price Worth It? – Advantages of Online College Courses
All of this information is great, but it doesn’t answer one important question: Is the price worth it? When compared with a traditional college course, online college courses have some distinct advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages of Online College Courses
As an online student, you’re able to make a schedule that works for you. You can take your classes in between work, family, and other obligations. This means that it’s possible to attend college part-time without incurring additional costs.
Online students often get the opportunity to take more classes for one price, instead of paying for each class individually. If you’re already taking traditional online courses , this could be beneficial as well. Some colleges offer transfer credit for some online classes.
Online students are also able to meet with their professors and fellow students. This may be done through Skype, email, video conferencing, and other forms of communication. This gives you the opportunity to form relationships with your instructors and classmates even though you’re not able to attend classes in person.
Online courses can allow students to earn a college degree that is recognized by employers while still working a full-time job or raising a family. A part-time course can still be a viable option for those that only have a fraction of the time.
Disadvantages of Online College Courses
It is also important to note that there are disadvantages of taking online college courses. The biggest disadvantage would be cost. If you take more than one course each quarter, the total cost will quickly become too expensive. If you take expensive classes like nursing or business, expect to pay thousands of dollars each quarter (and sometimes more).
Online courses also may not be the best option for many students. If you’re a mature-aged student, don’t want to drive every day, and can’t afford expensive course materials, online courses might not be right for you. The world of online education is constantly growing, so there’s always room for students that want to take classes in person.
You may also not be able to transfer credits to a traditional college. Some online colleges are regionally accredited, which means that they aren’t recognized by traditional schools. This can make it more difficult to transfer credits and earn your degree from a traditional school. However, there are alternatives, such as earning a certificate rather than an actual degree.

How to know if Online School Is Right For You ?

A major question many people ask is, “Is an online school right for me?” There are many advantages of taking classes online such as convenience and time flexibility, but there are also some key disadvantages to consider. Online schools come in all shapes and sizes, from traditional universities such as Ohio State University-Mohican that offer fully online degree programs to niche schools like Colorado Christian University which offers exclusively online degrees. Before deciding if an online program is a good fit for you, research all the schools that offer both on-campus and distance education opportunities so that you can make a more informed decision about which school works best for your situation.

About 10 years ago, communities used to discuss how online education would affect the future. Now, technology has made it possible for us to access information instantly. If you want to go back to school but don’t have enough time and money, the best thing you can do is enroll in an online school. No matter what field you want to go into or what your age is, there is a good chance that an online school can help you get the education that will lead you down your chosen path.

The first thing you should consider when looking into getting an online degree is not just finding out about the programs provided by specific schools but also about their reputation. The best way to research schools in terms of their reputation is to first find out if they are accredited by ACICS (accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools). For some people, this might seem like a lot of work, but the fact is that just about all the schools have their accreditation and it is all in your best interest to do your research.

Once you know which online school you want to go with, you have a few options. You can simply sign up for classes online as if it was any other college or university; another option is that if you live close enough to the school’s location, you could attend in person. Online schools don’t require you to attend classes in person, but it’s always a good idea to go in person just so that you can meet your teachers. This will give you the best options for financial aid, so this is another reason to do what it takes to go in person.

When deciding if an online school is right for you, you should think about all the options an online school has to offer and how those could benefit you. Even if certain fields of study are more suited for on-campus courses, not everyone has that option available; online schools are a great idea for anyone who wants a career and still wants time time with their family.

There is no doubt that online education will hold a huge impact on the future of our society. Not only do they offer classes on a large scale to students, but also they do their best to keep down the cost of education so that anyone with an interest in coursework can afford it. The best way to know if an online school is right for you is by researching as much as you can about these schools and comparing them with your current options. You never know when an online degree might just be what you need.

There are so many online schools to choose from, and they all offer a lot in terms of convenience and flexibility. Online programs can be beneficial for your schedule, as well as your wallet. The best way to find out if an online school is right for you is to research a few of the different schools that offer online programs, as well as their reputation and accreditation. Once you have done this research, deciding which program and school is right for you will be easy.

Online education is becoming more popular day by day. Technology has made it possible for students to access information anywhere at any time; thus, online education has become very accessible. If you want to get an education but don’t have enough time and money for a traditional university or college, you should consider online school. There are a lot of benefits to online schooling, ranging from flexible schedules to lower costs. Online schools can help you reach your goals faster than ever before.

There are several different types of online degree programs available, so it is important to figure out if they are right for you. Online schools offer many advantages over traditional universities and colleges, such as flexibility and freedom from common distractions like traffic and bad weather. In addition to all the advantages an online program offers, there are also many disadvantages that you should know about before joining any school. Luckily, there are several ways you can find out if an online school is right for you, and if you have any questions, especially about how much the program costs or what kind of credits you can get from it, then there are some great resources that can provide all the answers you need.

One of the main advantages to attending an online school is that no one will know whether or not you are actually attending class. You can take classes at any time of day and on different days without worrying about when other students will be in class. You also don’t have to worry about having to walk to another building with no guarantee that it will be open during your visit.

Another great thing about online schools is that they are easily accessible. Online schools provide students with 24/7 access to all of their coursework from any location, so your job doesn’t have to restrict you from studying. Not only do online school offer an accommodating schedule, but they also do their best to accommodate students with internet connection problems. They will ensure that you have a computer with the right software and connection speed before enrolling in any classes so that you can be successful.

Many online schools strive for virtual equality among their students, which means paying attention to every student’s needs and providing each student with the best education possible. Online school is not a cookie cutter classroom, there is no “one size fits all”, and it’s likely that you will interact with some of the most amazing people you have ever met.

The online schools are similar in many ways, but every program has its own unique features. The costs vary from school to school, but the average cost ranges from $1,000 to as much as $40,000 per year. There are also scholarships available for students who can’t afford to pay the full cost of their education; however, they are usually limited in a way that only encourages students who qualify for certain academic programs.

If you are interested in attending online school, but have some questions about how to find the best program for you, then check out any of these sites. The majority of these sites offer student information such as online application forms and admission details. They also provide advice on navigating an online education system, including how to navigate financial aid and academic credit transfer formats. Online schools will also help you put your education into perspective with regards to its value compared to traditional college.

It is important to note, however, that going to college will require you to give up some of your personal time. There is less time per day when you are in class than there is at home doing your own work. This can easily be overcome with the right online school program and a little motivation from yourself. Unfortunately, some online schools have not proven themselves as reliable or trustworthy institutions, so you’ll want to make sure that you have placed your trust in the right institution before enrolling in classes online.

There are many online schools available today; however, there are only a few worth considering because they focus on providing quality education without cutting corners. Overall, all online colleges in the United States are state approved.

Benefits Of Going To College Online

Familiarity is the key to comfort, and that is what so many students enjoy when they enroll in an online college degree. Comfortable clothes, cozy living spaces, and ambient light are not the standard when you go to class online. Students who are already comfortable with technology will find it easy to catch on with how things work in an online course. They also might be more likely to try it in the first place since they’re not worried about being judged based on their lack of skill on a computer or smart device.

Speed Is The Key

The pace of life is unceasingly quickening. People want everything faster than ever before, and the online classroom is no exception. Not only does an online course get students out into the workforce faster, but it also allows them to advance their education in a shorter amount of time. Some online schools have accelerated programs that allow students to finish their degree in half the time of a traditional classroom-based program. This comes with all the same benefits and more — you still get that degree, still get that diploma, and still meet your employer’s expectations for new hires.

Greater Flexibility For Students And Parents

Electronic notebooks and online programs make it possible for students to do their work from home. Renting or buying a laptop or tablet allows them to take their coursework with them anywhere they go — even to school if needed. With the growing popularity of mobile technology, this is becoming more of a trend than an exception for today’s students. Not only does the flexibility make it easier for students to fit school into their schedules and daily routines, but it also frees up parents who would otherwise have to drive a student back-and-forth across town daily. That alone allows people to save time, get to work or school on time, and enjoy the freedom of having a car for other things.

Cost Effective And Means Less Debt

A lot of online courses are designed so they include everything that a traditional course would include, but they do it for little to no additional cost. Sometimes there is an initial fee to get started, but that’s usually offset by scholarship opportunities or federal financial aid. The average student will see hundreds of dollars in savings each year just by signing up for a program online instead of trying to fit themselves into a campus-based program.

Multiple Contacts With Teachers And Students In Online Programs

One of the biggest benefits of going to school online is how easy it is to stay in touch with other students and teachers — both in and outside of the classroom. You can chat with classmates, send and receive messages, email a teacher, and leave reviews. You can even get your own blog or website that is completely private and anonymous. If you still want the face-to-face contact with teachers while in school, you don’t have to give up the convenience of meeting them online either. Online classes are taught by professors who are just as qualified as their campus-based counterparts — sometimes even more qualified since they are available all day and night as well. The campus-based teachers that you were used to seeing are still available for in-person classroom meetings if you want them.

Easy Access To Great Online Courses

From the early days of the internet, people have been using online resources to educate themselves. The internet has especially become a powerful tool for digitizing information and sharing it with millions of students around the world. You can get access to almost any university course online for free and get just as much out of it as your classmates would in a traditional classroom setting. Online courses don’t only offer more flexibility, but they also allow students to learn at their own pace and from a teacher who understands what they need better than anyone else in the world. They also include everything you would expect to get from a traditional classroom — quizzes, tests, and grades.

Amazing Access To The Same Tools And Technology That Professionals Use

Computer-based education isn’t new anymore. Most online programs have a full set of computer tools available to their students for them to learn and practice on. There are websites that will help you create digital projects that you can then showcase or submit in class. There are online text books that all your classmates have access to and can share with one another as well. These digital learning tools make it easy for anyone of any age or educational level to learn some new techniques, sharpen their skills, or just fill some gaps in their education.

How To Study For Online Classes ?

If you’re struggling to find a study routine that works for you, allow me to offer an alternative. I know that studying is daunting, especially when taking online classes. But with these five tips and tricks, I can guarantee that you’ll pass your exams with flying colors and ease.

Tip 1: Go Back To Basics- One of the biggest problems when it comes to studying is students trying to cram everything they need into their heads in one go. Instead of attempting this near impossible feat on your own, try doing some prepping beforehand by going over the course materials from a couple classes ago. If you’ve had a few classes go by and can’t find your old assignments in your files, worry not! You can always find them online.

The first step is to sign up for an online school. Then, you need to register for the courses you want to take. Most schools will send you a welcome email with links to all of the information you’ll need to get started.

Tip 2: Make Your Study Space Comfortable- In order for any studying session to be successful, you need to feel comfortable at all times. This means no distractions and no interruptions from friends or family members. When you’re comfortable, you’ll be much more likely to focus on your studies. Alternatively, if you need a break from studying, take it. You can always get back to work when you get home.

Tip 3: Cut Down On Distractions- To help you study without any interruptions, first block out the hours in your schedule that will be reserved for studying. This doesn’t have to be done completely perfectly; just block out two to three hours at a time and make sure it’s 8-10pm every night. Schedule all other activities— including social ones such as watching TV or going for a walk— during these hours.

Tip 4: Set An End Time- Once you know how long you have to study, it’s time to set a specific end time. Get into the habit of going to sleep and waking up in the same time zone. This will allow you to work smarter, not harder.

Tip 5: Learn How To Take Notes- If notes are the worst part of your courses, then it could be because you’re not doing them right. Instead of writing notes out on paper and taking quite a few pages to do so, try typing or recording them first. This allows you to make notes on your computer much faster and also ensures that you don’t have too many distractions between you and the teacher in front of your class.

Student Responsibilities In Online Learning

There are many differences between being in a traditional classroom and taking online courses. Online courses offer an opportunity to take undergraduate and graduate level classes without having to be on campus. With online courses, the student is typically responsible for all course-related tasks such as attending lectures, completing assignments, etc.

Although this has its advantages (freedom of location), there are also disadvantages associated with these types of learning environments. It can be difficult to make friends or build relationships with those within the course who are not physically present in the same place as you. Students working online often have to balance coursework with family, work, and other obligations.

Graduate or professional students who participate in online programs are receiving either their master’s degree or doctoral degree. Graduate students are often required to teach undergraduate classes and may also be required to do research in a speciality area on campus or in the community. The student’s presence on campus is always expected when he/she is teaching a class on campus because it is part of his/her contract with the university. This includes preparing lessons, attending department meetings, and any other university functions that need the graduate student’s presence during a certain time frame. Their presence on campus is also expected when they are conducting their research. The importance of this presence is based on the type of research being conducted and the need for communication between the student and his/her faculty member(s) who are supervising the research.

Research is a time-consuming activity and it can be difficult to balance these demands with other important demands (e.g., family or work). Faculty members often have expectations in regards to a student’s attendance at faculty meetings, participation in academic programs, and time spent working on projects. Participation in educational activities is typically recorded by enrolling students for a specific number of credits for each semester (or quarter).

For the most part, students are expected to attend class at the times scheduled for each course as this is one way of ensuring that students are learning the material and not just writing papers to get a passing grade. This includes a requirement for them to be present on the days that tests are administered. If they cannot attend class at specific times they’re required to make arrangements with their professor or take their test at another time set by their professor. Most universities require that final exams be given in person, because students can easily receive questions or answers from other students who may have taken the test before them.

The pressure for an online student not only comes from professors but also employers and family. Employers are reluctant to hire someone who has not had formal training. In the United States, there is the added pressure of finding employment in a poor economy. In addition, for some students, financial reasons (i.e., funding for their enrollment) are important factors in determining the success of their degree program and their future career path.

7 steps for successful online learning

Struggling in an online college course? The following blog post will provide you with several tips to help you complete your class with flying colors!

Learn more now on what to do and how to stay focused:

1) Check your assignment due dates and the amount of time they require to complete before deciding when you’ll have time for the assignments. It is important that you put work into your classes, which is why it is best not to wait until the last minute! Doing this can help reduce stress levels as well as maintain a healthy balance between school life and personal time.

2) Take advantage of online tutorial resources, such as those from Tutor.com and BrainFuse. There are even online tutorials available in various instructional formats for many subjects, including math, statistics, and chemistry. You should especially take advantage of tutoring services if you’ve struggled with your class or aren’t sure how to approach a specific problem or assignment. Tutors can help you understand the material more clearly and point out fundamental issues that may be holding you back from success in your course.

3) Don’t stress out if you feel like you are behind in an online course. Being ahead of the class or on a faster pace can be rewarding, but also stressful. It is important to take it slow if you don’t feel like you understand the material or feel overwhelmed by your assignments. Most teachers in online courses are flexible and do not penalize students who would like to go at their own pace, so there is no need to worry!

4) Your instructor will likely give you feedback after each assignment, such as answering questions about the content covered and providing suggestions for improvement. Taking the time to read your instructor’s feedback will help you understand what you can do better and how to get a better grade in the future.

5) Make sure that you complete all assignments, even if the work is not absolutely perfect. Even though this can seem like extra work, it will help you out of a jam when you are short on time or struggle with certain areas of the course material. Although it may be disappointing to discover that you need more time on some of your assignments, take comfort in knowing that this is likely an issue with one assignment and not your overall ability to succeed as an online student!

6) Stay organized so that your progress is easier to track and record. Staying organized will make it easier to track your progress in the course and stay on top of due dates. An easy way to stay organized is by creating a calendar where you can input assignments, record grades, and schedule deadlines for each assignment. If you are working with a tutor, you should also schedule an appointment using your calendar!

7) Finally, remember that your online college experience is what you make of it! You have plenty of freedom to take ownership of your education in an online course so that you can truly succeed as an online student. Use these 7 tips to become successful in your online classes now!

What Do I Need For Online Classes ?

If you’re not a high school student, but want the priviledge of living the good life with coconuts and pineapple, then online classes are your best bet. Online learning can be fairly daunting for some folks, but don’t worry. We’re here to give you a few websites to help make your life easier. Check out these tips and enjoy all the benefits in virtually no time!

1) You’ll need an internet connection.

I know that my free college education didn’t come with a free computer and I also know that when I was in high school, we had to type everything out by hand. Thankfully my day-to-day life has been digital since the time of the first computer. If you are getting online classes at university or your local community college, then you most likely have internet as well.

2) You’ll need to download some reading material.

You want to make sure you’re ready for your class in advance, so you’ll need to download some reading material and study each class’s syllabus carefully before attending your first lecture or lecture session. You’ll need to download the reading material for your subjects too.

3) You’ll need to make sure online classes are accessible on your computer.

For your class, you’ll have to make sure that the software is compatible with your computer and that you can access it easily from the comfort of your home. Many students end up purchasing a laptop computer in order to accommodate their education. It may be pricey, but it’s better than having a failed grade on your transcript. Simply installing an operating system like Windows 7 or 8 is usually enough to get the job done. Be sure to check with professor for more specific information on software compatibility with each subject area of study.

4) You’ll need to make sure that your computer is connected to the internet at home.

The internet should always be readily available at your home in case you need to look something up or print something. Also, you will have to install software for your computer and for your printer; but again, this is nothing that differs from what a first-year student would have to do in any other subject.

5) You’ll need to prepare for the tests online.

Because online classes are self-paced, students should anticipate some more free time than they would if they were in a face-to-face course. This means that students should plan on spending some extra time preparing for their tests.

Online learning can be fairly daunting for some folks, but don’t worry. We’re here to give you a few websites to help make your life easier. Check out these tips and enjoy all the benefits in virtually no time!

What Supplies Do You Need For Online College Courses ?

Online college courses require a few different supplies. Here’s what you’ll need:

A computer – Any new and recent laptop or desktop will do.

An internet connection – It is important to have an internet connection that can handle video streaming, downloading, and browsing the internet seamlessly with no noticeable interruptions. Most colleges will not allow students to participate in online courses if they cannot stream the lectures or download any required course materials.

An email address with access to check it frequently – In addition to registering for classes, you will communicate with your instructors and classmates via email correspondence so it is important that you have access to check your email when needed.

Academic Supplies – These will probably be the most expensive supplies you’ll need. Here are the ones you’ll want to purchase:

A highlighter – It’s a simple tool that helps you learn by highlighting key terms, introducing important concepts and instructions, or noting passages to read carefully. Highlighters are available in different colors and sizes for varying needs. It is also quite handy for marking your place in books or textbooks and will come in handy as you get further into college studies.

A pencil sharpener – Many students find it difficult just to work with their pens due to how often they break, but pencils are not particularly known to break easily. However, you will still need to sharpen them often. If you keep them at class or at your laptop computer, then you’ll want to get a pencil sharpener that’s small enough to fit inside your bag.

A notebook – This should be large enough to comfortably fit in the required textbook for all of your college courses in addition to any additional supplies you will need for classroom notes and assignments. To be on the safe side, choose one that is waterproof so if anything spills inside it or if it ever rains where you are studying, it will stay dry and clean.

A calculator – You’ll need a calculator mostly for math, science, and finance courses. The good news is that most calculators will be able to handle the calculations needed for most courses. However, the more complex your course is, the better you should consider purchasing a specific scientific or financial calculator.

Highlighters and pencils are pretty much standard in any classroom setting so you’ll probably have those already. The other supplies are just what you’ll need for online college courses. Most of them are easily portable and will allow you to complete your assignments and study when traveling or on the go.

Are Colleges Offering Free Online Courses?

There are many reasons why colleges and universities offer free online courses. One reason could be to help students learn more about their specific career goals by narrowing down what field they want to pursue in further schooling. Another reason, which is most commonly seen, is that the university or college may be using this as a marketing tool in order to grow or maintain enrollment at the institution.

However, not all traditional institutions offer free online courses because it’s costly for them. Educational institutions do not make any money from offering free online courses. Many traditional universities and colleges offer free online courses because they receive funding from the government.

For example, Southern New Hampshire University offers many of its courses online and for free.[The] reason we’re able to offer the classes without charge is because of the federal grant program that pays for them, called U.S. Department of Education Federal Training Grant,” said a representative from Southern New Hampshire University’s public relations department via email correspondence. “SNHU is one of the 23 institutions in the country awarded these grants and we currently have about 1,000 students in our program.”

Students who are enrolled in federal training grant programs are saving thousands of dollars by taking their courses online.

“Students can complete as many as 24 courses for a bachelor’s degree at no cost,” wrote the representatives from Southern New Hampshire University. “That’s equivalent to three full years of tuition, or $15,600.”

The U.S. Department of Education was also asked about why some colleges and universities offer free online courses and some do not. The department stated via email correspondence that they offer free online courses in order to help students be better prepared for the workforce and to help them graduate in a timely manner.

“Students who may not have been able to attend college due to financial issues, or for other reasons, now have that opportunity,” wrote the representative of the U.S. Department of Education via email correspondence.

Some of the ways that the U.S. Department of Education helps pay for these online courses is through grants and loans or by giving federal training funds to state governments who then divide them among their institutions.[The] federal government will give these funds directly to a state agency, which then gives it out to colleges and universities that offer students online courses,” wrote the representative from the U.S. Department of Education via email correspondence. “State agencies can also receive funding directly from the federal government if they request it.

But why is it that the government wants to help pay for these online courses? The answer is simple, and it’s called the education surplus.

“The education surplus is the excess of what we spend on education, compared to what we get back in economic benefits, such as higher incomes and greater productivity,” said a representative from the U.S. Department of Education via email correspondence.

Students who are enrolled in federal training grant programs are saving thousands of dollars by taking their courses online because they would have to pay for them as if they were taking them in person.

“For example, the average cost of tuition, room and board is $17,877 for a full-time student at an American public university,” wrote the representatives from Southern New Hampshire University via email correspondence. “But that same high school graduate could take the same courses as a new federal grant recipient, study at home completely free and still earn a bachelor’s degree in five years.”

Another way to help students save more money by taking their free online courses is by taking advantage of federal Pell grants.

“A 2017 report by the U.S. Department of Education found that Pell grants are the third-largest source of federal education funding, and that because they are awarded only to undergraduate students, many students who will never earn a bachelor’s degree are eligible,” wrote the representatives from Southern New Hampshire University. “According to the report, Pell grant recipients study non-freshman courses more frequently, take longer to complete degrees and earn lower salaries.”

The U.S. Department of Education also stated that their goal is to help students save money without affecting what is already working for them. In other words, the government doesn’t want to put any restrictions on how colleges and universities offer their classes nor do they want to limit access free online courses because it’s not currently working for them.

“As a department, we are not seeking to change what’s working for the institution,” wrote the representative from the U.S. Department of Education via email correspondence. “While institutions may be concerned about losing revenue, there are ways to offset that loss and increase services. The report recommends institutions communicate openly with their stakeholders about how online learning will affect their campus and local community.”

If you’re considering enrolling in an online program, whether it’s free or not, consider what your goals are as an individual. If you only need to earn a degree or certificate, but still need to be hands-on with certain programs and activities, then taking online courses will save you a lot of money. But if you want to be able to interact with your classmates, ask questions whenever you want and be in an active learning environment, then an online program is probably not for you.
