Drawbridge Health wishes to make it easier for doctor’s offices and practices to collect little samples of your blood for testing on site using a handheld device.
The device uses proprietary technologies to collect and stabilize just a couple of drops of blood for a variety of tests such as hormone levels, genetic testing, monitoring disease and other things sufferers normally need to get done in an outside lab like Quest Diagnostics or Lab Corp..
The device can stay in the clinic and the Drawbridge cartridge would be shipped out to the third party lab for results.
Of course, any blood diagnostics start promising to collect just a couple of drops of blood for testing on a little device will get in comparison to Theranos, which first promised to provide results for countless diseases on a single drop of blood. It’s an understatement to state things didn’t go so well for this particular startup and it appears it may now be running out of money.
But says, unlike Theranos, the blood collects. It doesn’t even do the testing.
“Partners are going to run the tests on our samples. Our duty is to provide them a quality sample,” Stack told TechCrunch.
GE Ventures started the business through an old school VC method of coming up with the idea in house, together with the promise of launching and financing the startup as it evolves.
The idea probably sounds fantastic to anybody who hates going out to a lab for blood work and then going to the doctor. Minimal discomfort is also promised by the device for people who despise needles as it takes just a couple of drops from your upper arm. I’m told it seems like less than a pinch.
But first Drawbridge should make it through a couple obstacles. It’s days for Drawbridge and it’s just now researching rsquo offices & partnerships with practices and doctor.
It will need to go through FDA approval, which it has applied for as a medical device.
This summer GE Ventures hired to run the ship as CEO and the startup intends on a launch next year, pending that FDA approval.
Of course, there are other approaches to cutting out the blood number middleman — Forward and both One Medical have in-house labs at which patients can get blood work done.
There are also other blood penis diagnostics out in the medical field but, those, such as Theranos, come with risk, as McCracken points out.
“The sample testing process is hard and inconvenient for patients and providers&rdquo. “It demands rsquo & processing equipment, frequently a technician trained to draw blood, and a visit to the doctor;s hospital or office. Drawbridge Health is well positioned to transform diagnostic testing for patients, testing labs, healthcare stakeholders and consumers by combining world class technology developed by GE Healthcare and also a founding team to address a significant market need. ”
