We Spoke To The Man Who Started The Hunt For Intelligent Alien Life

Youve heard of SETI, right? Its the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, where astronomers point telescopes at remote superstars in the expectations of hearing signals from alien civilizations.

But what you might not know is the person who started everything there is. That person is Frank Drake , now 86, who in 1960 conducted the first modern SETI experiment. Called Project Ozma, he employed a 25 -meter ( 82 -foot) National Radio Astronomy Observatory( NRAO) telescope in Green Bank, West Virginia, to studystars 11 light-years from Earth. For that reason, hes often called the father of SETI.

That has changed everything. We now have people who work in SETI and am confident that their jobs will exist a year from now.

Using Milners money, Breakthrough Listen has bought observing time on three powerful telescopes around the world the Green Bank Radio Telescope( GBT) in West Virginia, the Lick Observatory’s Automated Planet Finder on Mt. Hamilton in California, and the Parkes Radio Telescope in Australia. Just the other period, the first scientific outcomes from such projects were announced, and while they came up empty-handed, there is now a great opportunity to perform one of the most extensive SETI investigations ever.

Dont give up all hope just yet, though. Thanks largely to Milner, SETI has a brand-new lease on life through Breakthrough Listen, and other organizations like the SETI Institute are still busy scouring the sky. Whether well ever actually find a signal, well, thats hard to say. But there is at least a new blare to seem and find out.
