Trump speaks at a summit where flyers warned homosexuality is a public health crisis

President Donald Trump on Friday addressed the Values Voter Summit, in Washington, D.C., an Yearly event arranged by the anti-LGBT Family Research Council (FRC).

Trump, who’s the first sitting U.S. president to speak at the event, said that he had been “honored and thrilled” to be present at “that this incredible gathering of friends, so many friends. ” He had been received with cheers and applause.

“It’s great to be back here with so many friends at the 2017 Values Voter Summit, and we understand what that means. We know what that means,” Trump began. “America is a nation of believers, and together we are reinforced and sustained by the energy of prayer. ” his address included condolences for the victims of the recent Vegas shooting, the flooding in Texas and Puerto Rico, and the wildfires in California, and he talked about respect for the flag, to raucous cheers. Throughout the address, Trump returned to topics of the country’s faith unity, and family values. “We love our own families, we love our neighbors, we love our country,&rdquo. “We cherish the sacred dignity of every human life. ”

Some of the attendees might have different ideas, however: In the summit, guests received bag bags with flyers promoting a “significant new book” known as The Health Hazards of Homosexuality.

“Finally: the truth about the public health crisis,” the flyer reads. It says the “‘gay’ and sexual practices” are one of dangers to the &ldquo public. ” The flyer adds that “homosexual and bisexual men” would be to blame for “the recent gains in STDs. ” The book, authored by anti-LGBT group MassResistance, also describes the “disproportionate prevalence of disorder and mental disorders from the GLB community,” in accordance with the flyer.

The FRC, that organized the Values Voter Summit, has been designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), which says the group’s “specialization is defaming gays and lesbians. ”

Joel Kasnetz, a spokesman for the Democratic National Committee, also denounced Trump’s trip, based on BuzzFeed.

“Now, Donald Trump reminded us that he's among the country’s largest threats to LGBTQ people,” Kasnetz told BuzzFeed. “The bigotry on screen at Values Voter Summit ought to be reversed, but rather was honored with a full slate of top Republican officials and visits by the president. ”

From the 2016 presidential election, Trump--despite being opposed to gay marriage--had positioned himself through tweets and speeches as a LGBT ally compared to other conservative candidates.

Since the election, however, Trump and his government have aligned with anti-LGBT associations, people, and policies. Notably, the LGBT page disappeared from the official White House site on the day of their inauguration, and Trump didn't admit Pride Month in June.

On Wednesday, Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) Tweeted he is “profoundly concerned by the Trump government’s hostility to rights. ”

In his address at the Values Voter Summit, Trump also received raucous applause for defending the religious values of Christian conservatives.

“We’re getting in that amazing Christmas season that people don’t talk about anymore,” Trump explained. “They don’t use the term Christmas because it’hellip & s not politically correct; Guess what? We’re stating ‘Merry Christmas&rsquo. ’”
