Blizzard shown the initial seven cities and group owners participating in Blizzard’s pro-level Overwatch League today. Overwatch League Commissioner Nate Nanzer additionally revealed that participating teams may have in-game items that players can equip to show their support.
In a meeting, Nanzer demonstrated that Blizzard is planning on releasing team-branded protagonist skins, skins, and participant icons.
“Something which we’re really excited about at Blizzard is doing very robust in-game items around these groups: using sprays and skins and participant icons and things like that available for lovers who play Overwatch to show their support for San Francisco or LA or even Shanghai,” Nanzer explained. “That work is ongoing and we will probably have an announcement prior to the initiation of the league around what that’s gonna seem like.”
When asked if groups will get revenue from sales of those in-game items, Nanzer said: “Yeah, absolutely,” confirming that these products will be available for sale in some form.
Other games which are popular esports have comparable revenue streams for groups depending on the selling of digital goods. Professional Counter-Strike: Worldwide Offensive teams make money when players and fans purchase digital, team-branded stickers to place on their weapons.
Furthermore, Overwatch League teams will share revenue from other sources, Nanzer explained.
“The groups share in each of the worldwide earnings generated by the league, whether that’s global sponsorship, international media rights for the content, global physical product in addition to virtual merchandise, in addition to tickets and other items for league-run occasions,” he explained.
