Jeffrey Brotman, Who Co-Founded Costco in 1980s, Dies at 74

Costco Wholesale Corp.. Chairman Jeffrey Brotman, who co-founded the organization and helped kick off a movement that spread warehouse-style shopping to much of the world, has died. He was 74.

He died Tuesday morning, the retailer said in a statement. “The thoughts of #x 2019 & Costco;s #x 2019 & board, management and employees are with Jeff;s family and spouse, & #x 201D; without providing details the company said.

Was a before turning into entrepreneurship lawyer. He helped start the Costco chain using Jim Sinegal, who proceeded to become the organization & #x 2019; s chief executive officer in 1982.

He served for a long time as chairman, although #x 2019 & Brotman wasn; t as much of a face for Costco. He also was a director on Starbucks Corp.’s board throughout the ’90s.

Jeffrey Hart Brotman was born according to public records. He attended the University of Washington and majored in political science. He practiced law in Seattle, after graduating from the law school in 1967. He also experimented in running businesses Michael, with his brother.

In the decades since Costco was founded, it has become among the largest merchants with a no-frills decor and approach to shopping that rivals have frequently tried to imitate. The Issaquah, Washington-based company now has 736 warehouse shops, including 511 from the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

Brotman needed for discovering new Costco places, balancing the need to become visible without overwhelming a community with traffic #x 201C; #x 201D & sixth sense & a, said board member John Meisenbach, president of insurance firm MCM.

“everybody thought it was a tough sale because many warehouse clubs had neglected, & #x 201D; Meisenbach said, When Jim Sinegal and he began it. “they took care of their employees, and They stuck to their guns rather than trying to become a fancy place. ”

Brotman also was an avid golfer and skier, Meisenbach said.

Costco didn’t say who would replace Brotman as chairman. The business didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Brotman headed the board since the organization’s beginning, except through a stretch from 1993 to 1994 when he was vice chairman.
