Concrn is a mobile app that enables individuals to help those experiencing mental health crises by connecting them with compassionate responders. Concrn has responded to over 2,000 crisis reports, since launch its program a couple of years ago.
Concrn currently serves those in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood. That means if you see someone with a mental health crisis or an problem with chemical abuse, and don’t think calling 911 is the answer that is proper, you may use Concrn to ask a responder that is compassionate.
Concrn includes a responder team that is lead, but there are other crisis volunteers that donate their time. Several of the responders are out of the Tenderloin.
“Our focus has been to create economic opportunities for people in the Tenderloin community that have previously been marginalized or not able to access employment and also people who have undergone their own mental health crisis in the past,” Concrn Co-executive Director Neil Shah told TechCrunch.
The responders will ascertain if it needs to be escalated to the authorities or if they could deal with the situation. The responders, that have many different backgrounds in emergency medical training social work and other places, need to experience a 20-hour training session. The training covers response training and conflict resolution.

On a daily basis, Concrn receives anywhere from five to 10 crisis reports. While Concrn’s approach has largely been concentrated on the Tenderloin, the staff was coordinating with other mobile crisis units, city agencies and service providers in San Francisco so as to deploy the most compassionate service suppliers to other areas throughout town.
“Our objective is to work with the towns and with service suppliers and use our technician as a communication and lynchpin network involving all these siloed organizations, & rdquo.
Looking Concrn is expecting to raise $250,000 to continue creating the support and launch a program for responders. Right now, a dispatcher handles the inbound report, but the program would enable responders to link directly with the reporter. Concrn hopes to make a playbook to disperse to other communities that encounter difficulties.
“Our vision is one where through a combo of technology and this community training, we could build communities that are able to offer care that is compassionate and humane Shah said. “Our belief is that when community members, service providers, government agencies are all communicating and coordinating collectively via Concrn, we create a more effective route to resilience for vulnerable individuals in need of support. ”
