Beauty startup Glossier will start shipping to Canada, the U.K. and France, with more countries to come

Glossier, the direct-to-consumer beauty startup thats increased $34.4 million in funding to date, will kick off its international growth this month.

Ever since Day 1, weve dreamt of making Glossier a global attractiveness movement which celebrates real girls in real life, founder and CEO Emily Weiss composed in a blog post. And that moment is coming upreally soon really. Glossier will start shipping its cosmetic and skin care products to Canada later this month, the U.K. later this year, and France in 2018, with different nations in the functions.

Glossier started in 2014, four years later Emily Weiss, a former fashion assistant at Vogue and W magazines, started blogging about attractiveness in Into The Gloss. Its most recent funding was a $24 million Series B led by Institutional Venture Partners in autumn 2016 (additional investors include Thrive Capital, which led Glossiers $8.4 million Series A at 2014).

In Disrupt NY in May, ” Weiss advised the audience in a panel that attractiveness isnot traditionally a VC kind of company. But its a quarter-of-a-trillion dollar market globally, and ripe for disruption. The information speaks for itself…But you also wouldnt think how excited people get when you put a bag of merchandise on the dining table, men and women.

Weiss first detailed Glossiers expansion plans at a blog post two years ago about the challenges of making a makeup brand global. As an example, Weiss explained in markets that are new, brands need to locate responsible parties, or spouses that essentially act as a hybrid between a chemist and a attorney to ensure that all products shipped overseas meet local packaging and formulation regulations. They then have to figure out how to match ingredient and program instructions in different languages on packaging without creating more waste. Glossiers objective is to respond to client inquiries within 12 hours of the first email, so it also needed to create a customer support staff that can work across time zones.

Glossier already has an office in Montreal and will open one shortly in London. The business will have a deliberate approach to its global expansion, Weiss composed, so it can build user communities in each country before launching in a different one. She asked for ideas about what states to launch in next, but added that Glossier cant ship to areas which need product testing on animals because it is a cruelty-free brandnew.
