Battlefield V developer is reportedly prototyping a battle royale mode

Following in the footsteps of battle royale sensations like Fortnite, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, and now potentially Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, EA DICE is reportedly prototyping a battle royale mode for the upcoming Battlefield V, according to a report by VentureBeat citing an anonymous source with insider knowledge of the studio.

For anyone sleeping under a rock (or maybe just not paying attention to recent gaming trends), the battle royale mode became a popular genre after the early access release of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds last year, followed by team-based, horde-mode shooter Fortnite added its own 100-player mode. One player (or teams of up to four) battle to be the last one standing against numerous other players on a single map.

There are few details on DICE’s battle royale mode, including how many players could be duking it out for supremacy. Considering that Battlefield V is likely launching around this fall, it may be unlikely that a battle royale mode will be ready if it’s only in a prototyping phase. Still, it could just as likely be released as a free, downloadable update to the base game later on.

EA declined to comment on VentureBeat’s initial report.

There’s no doubt that EA would love to get a slice of the pie that’s currently earning Fortnite $1 million a day on mobile alone and $126 million in February. Reports of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 developer Treyarch abandoning its single-player campaign for a possible battle royale mode can only bolster its fellow competitors to get in on the action.
